Most of the manpower, equipment etc came from the public sector with no additional cost to the government. If you took all that money and spent in on a poverty reduction program or something, it won't make much difference at all. But celebrations like these are good for any government. It gives the people a break from all the depressing things in life. The government needs to whip up nationalist jingoism in a time like this. So don't think the money's gone to waste.
